L’aéronautique, l’automobile, l’architecture, les systèmes d’information géographique (SIG), mais aussi la biologie et la génétique sont bouleversés par l’arrivée de la visualisation immersive et stéréoscopique en trois dimensions (3D). Cette technologie facilite le travail des designers et des ingénieurs en permettant d’explorer virtuellement un produit sous toutes ses facettes avant de lancer la phase de production.

La technologie permet de visualiser en grandeur nature et en 3D un prototype ou un modèle virtuel à partir de ses données contenues dans l’un des 200 logiciels de travail compatible. La projection se fait sans conversion de données et en temps réel. L’opérateur peut alors interagir avec l’environnement 3D pour changer un élément du design : une couleur de voiture, agrandir une distance, ajouter, changer ou déplacer un objet… De nombreuses options, telles que l’enregistrement vidéo, l’assemblage virtuel, le « finger tracking », la fusion de scènes 3D ou l’annotation digitale sont possibles !

Un travail facilité et plus rapide

Grâce à cette technologie, il est par exemple possible de se « promener » à l’intérieur d’un sous-marin. Il est ainsi possible de vérifier la hauteur sous plafond, les distances entre les éléments, déplacer des objets pour améliorer l’agencement, etc. De leur côté, les constructeurs automobiles peuvent améliorer le design beaucoup plus facilement. Il leur est, par exemple, beaucoup plus facile de choisir une couleur et la forme de la voiture grâce à un rendu « réel » en grandeur nature. Le fait de pouvoir zoomer et de vérifier chaque recoin permet d’améliorer le prototype avant sa construction.

Cette technologie est aussi utilisée par les constructeurs de centrales nucléaires et par les compagnies pétrolières pour décider de la réalisation d’un forage. Dans l’aéronautique, elle sert à construire les nouveaux modèles d’avions et, dans le secteur agricole, elle est très utilisée par les constructeurs de moissonneuses-batteuses américains.

Les applications de la technologie sont presque infinies dès lors qu’elles nécessitent des constructions de modèles ou de prototypes coûteux. Le logiciel Techviz 3D permet d’améliorer le design dès les premières étapes, sans avoir à construire ces prototypes.« La solution immersive stéréoscopique de TechViz permet de réduire les coûts de production, plus besoin de construire systématiquement des maquettes physiques pour observer un produit sous tous les angles, explique Alexis Vartanian, Directeur Technique de TechViz.« La technologie permet aussi de vérifier les données et de faire des changements en temps réel », rappelle-t-il.

Des partenariats fructueux

Plusieurs entreprises se sont regroupées pour créer cet environnement 3D virtuel, immersif et interactif. Entre autres, la société TechViz édite le logiciel, Christie s’occupe des projecteurs, Da Lite des écrans, PNY des cartes graphiques, ART GmbH des capteurs de position, Volfoni des lunettes, HP des ordinateurs et Anticyp Simulation s’occupe de l’intégration finale. Il est possible d’acquérir le tout pour environ 400 000 euros, contre 2 millions d’euros y a encore quelques années. Le prix devrait encore sensiblement diminuer au fur et à mesure que les ventes se développeront.

Pour promouvoir cette technologie, TechViz et ses partenaires ont créé un espace immersif de 50 m2 en juin 2013, au sein d’une salle de visualisation sur quatre faces. Elle permet de nombreuses démonstrations de visualisation d’applications de modèles 3D afin d’illustrer l’étendue des capacités de la solution. Les clients sont au rendez-vous et l’intérêt est grandissant. « Chaque jour, nous avons au moins deux entreprises importantes qui viennent tester la technologie », confie Alexis Vartanian.

OXFORD, UK – Vicon, the motion capture technology specialists for the entertainment, life sciences and engineering industries, has announced a series of customer presentations that will take place at its SIGGRAPH booth (#733) on August 12-14 in Vancouver, Canada. Customers spanning media and entertainment, education and virtual product design will share their motion capture expertise and provide insight into their latest projects. Vicon will also unveil groundbreaking new products, and enhancements to its existing motion capture software.

Framestore’s motion capture supervisor Ben Guthrie, and senior motion capture technical director Gary Marshall, will reveal how they used Vicon motion capture systems for the Academy Award-winning blockbuster, Gravity.

Leading motion capture studio The Capture Lab will provide insight into how they are creating unique, automated motion capture pipeline tools using Vicon cameras and Blade 2 software.

Autodesk 3D artist Lukas Faeth will present ‘3D Automotive Visualization with Autodesk VRED Professional’, demonstrating immersive virtual prototyping in action using Autodesk VRED 3D visualization software, a live Vicon system and Tracker software.

Karl Abson, lecturer in creative technology at Bradford University, will present ‘An Introduction to Quadruped

Motion Capture’, using motion capture of a horse in this beginner’s guide to capturing four-legged creatures.

James Brown, visualization designer at 3D visualization specialists Lumiscaphe, will demonstrate how the company uses Vicon Tracker software and the Apex tracking tool for virtual manufacturing and design.

Alexis Vartanian, CTO at 3D visualization solutions provider TechViz, will give a presentation on displaying high- resolution 3D virtual prototypes in real time directly from desktop 3D applications in a fully-immersive 3D virtual environment, using TechViz XL software alongside Vicon Tracker and Apex.

Throughout the show, display systems specialist Pufferfish will showcase their latest multi-touch stereoscopic 3D display with Vicon Tracker and Bonita systems. The new display represents a major step forward in virtual reality, whereby volumetric data exits the Immersive Room virtual environment and enters the room.

The JVRC 2010 (The Joint Virtual Reality Conference) of EuroVR-EGVE-VEC has been regrouping in 2010 the 16th Eurographics Symposium on Virtual Environments, the 7th EuroVR (INTUITION) Conference, and the annual Virtual Efficiency Congress.


JVRC 2010 provided an opportunity for virtual reality researchers, engineers and users to interact, share new results and new applications, show live demonstrations of their work, and discuss emerging directions for the field.


At JVRC 2010, TechViz was proud to showcase in collaboration with our reseller Viscon and our partner A.R.T. (for the tracking system), the newest options of our TechViz XL solution. TechViz XL – the driver and its options – is the tool which allows you to go beyond the desktop workstation, to display virtual prototypes in real time, directly from your desktop 3D application into a virtual environment without any data conversion and without any limitation for resolution, size, shape or performance.

Ensight Forum, Paris, France


Ensight, a strategic software partner of TechViz, has been organizing on the 27th of September in Paris, France, the Ensight Forum, an event regrouping key partners and users of Ensight software.


This Forum aimed at providing the attendees with fruitful insights into Scientific Visualisation and Postprocessing techniques and practices in industry. This event helped to understand the current and future values of Scientific Visualisation and Post-processing, its trends and expected achievements, and

especially those expected in the future versions of EnSight. This day was supposed to reflect and meet the

industry needs on different levels, from the perspective of decision makers, experts and users.


Speakers were be able to talk about their company and their relationship with Ensight. Companies participating at the event were also be able to showcase their newest solutions combining their product and Ensight software as complementary products.


TechViz was happy to participate and exhibit at the Ensight Forum and showcase there it’s innovative solution TechViz Fusion.


TechViz Fusion allows you to merge 3D data of two OpenGL applications into one immersive view. This view takes the relative depth of these two applications into consideration. Every modification to the prototype in either application is immediately reflected in the one common immersive view.
